Optical coatings nowadays play a much more important role not only in the conventional optical system, but also in the emerging industrial applications. The ultimate optical and non-optical performances such as low loss level, thermal stability, mechanical behavior and laser damage threshold are required. Great progress has been made in almost all aspects but there are still problems and barriers to progress. Thus, their characterization and possible solutions represent important features of this conference.

Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang, is the most distinguished and beautiful City in China. Marco Polo once declared it to be “the most beautiful and elegant city in the world”. Hangzhou was the capital of the Wu and Yue States in the 10th Century during the Five Dynasties Period, and had its political heyday in the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279), when it served as the capital of China.
